REASONS FOR USING VITAMIN AND MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS
We all consume vitamin and minerals one way or another through what we consume in our diets. But, sometimes what we consume is not adequate. People with very low calorie intakes do not meet their needs for nutrients, vegetarians may not receive adequate calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamin B-12, certain disorders or diseases and some medications interfere with nutrient intake, digestion, metabolism, and absorption.
Also if you smoke, drink alcohol, coffee, or tea, have poor digestion or food allergies, have stress, eat a lot of processed foods or take out food and exercise daily and weekly? These are just a few good reasons to be using vitamin and mineral supplements that lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. These conditions all need vitamin and mineral supplements to protect against deficiencies in vitamins and minerals.
If you generally eat a well balanced meal every day. Chances are you might not need vitamin and mineral supplements. But, there are few people in the world that eat a well balanced meal every day so supplementation is highly recommended. If you think you or your children need vitamin and mineral supplements, then a commercially available multivitamin would be a good choice. Consume one tablet the start of each day.
There are some important things to remember when using vitamin and mineral supplements. Too much can be harmful. Don't overdose or take mega doses. Many people think that if one can do me good then more will be much better. Mega doses can be harmful to your health. For example, to much vitamin A can cause bone pain and hypertension, to much vitamin C can cause kidney stones. So be a smart about you supplementation. If you can, try and get your vitamin and mineral sources through the food you eat, and turn to supplements when you must.
